atrahasis

what is 'atrahasis'?

The heart of this project lies in a story that revolves around a couple living in close proximity to an ocean that is sadly succumbing to increasing pollution levels. This couple comprises a fisherman and a gardener, whose lives are intricately entwined with the ocean and its bounties. Through a captivating montage, the film aims to depict their relationship, daily routine, and the consequences they face due to the environmental degradation surrounding them.

As the narrative unfolds, we witness the couple's simple yet profound daily rituals, such as waking up, embarking on their small rowboat, and fishing in the sea to procure their sustenance. Simultaneously, the other partner diligently tends to their garden, nurturing the produce with care. Each day culminates with a shared meal created from their collective efforts. However, the passage of time and the relentless onslaught of pollution gradually ravage their property, deplete their food sources, destroys their home and ultimately compromises their well-being.

Through this poignant film, I intend to offer social commentary on the importance of preserving clean and safe waterways, emphasizing the dire consequences of neglecting this crucial responsibility.

where did the title come from?

The term 'atrahasis' comes from the title of 18th century Akkadian epic that exhibits one of the many retellings of the story of the "great flood". This film reprises the themes of the epic (human influence and disregard leading to catastrophic natural disasters of god-like proportions) and offers a warning from a distant future where flood waters will decimate the population again.
